The gift set guide

Fragrance gift sets: compare the contents and real cost

A bottle, a body product, a travel size: a set brings together different things. List the contents and compare what you will use before paying extra.

Start with the bottle you are looking for

You want to give someone a fragrance they know and find its name on a gift set. Before assessing the whole set, identify the main bottle: full name, concentration and volume. Does the set contain exactly the version requested? A similar photograph or a collection name cannot answer that question. If you are looking for a 50 ml eau de parfum, a box containing another concentration or only miniatures meets a different need.

For a discovery, start with the person’s preferences and opportunities to try the scent. Adding more items does not resolve uncertainty about how it smells. For an exact replacement, a confirmed reference remains the best starting point for your inventory.

List each item instead of adding up millilitres

Copy the contents stated on the product page. Separate the main fragrance, travel size, complementary products and accessories. If the text and photograph seem to disagree, ask the merchant to confirm the contents before comparing. The inventory below is entirely fictional and does not represent a set for sale.

  • Do not calculate a fragrance price over 135 ml by adding the 50 ml, 10 ml and 75 ml of lotion.
  • Even the two fragrance sizes need a confirmed reference and concentration before comparing by volume.
  • Assess a pouch by its use; its item count does not enter a price per millilitre.
Fictional example: read each item for what it is
Listed itemQuantityWhat to confirm
Eau de parfum50 mlExact name and concentration
Travel size10 mlSame fragrance and stated presentation
Body lotion75 mlA complementary product, separate from the fragrance

Calculate the extra amount you are willing to pay

Here is a second invented example, in a single currency. The bottle alone costs €64, with €5 delivery: a total of €69. A set containing the same bottle costs €82, including delivery. The actual extra cost is €82 − €69 = €13. The question is now concrete: do you want to spend those €13 on the other items in the set?

Do not automatically assign accessories a resale value or deduct a recommended price you have not checked. If you would not have bought any extras, the additional amount remains an expense. If one item meets a specific need, also compare buying only what you need separately.

Fictional example: two orders with the same main bottle
OptionListed priceAssumed deliveryTotal paid
Bottle alone€64€5€69
Gift set€82€0€82

For a gift, check what the recipient will actually receive

Record the exact contents and packaging offered when you order. Gift wrapping, a card and any sample are separate items: do not assume they are included. If a date matters, check the delivery information for the relevant address and keep a record of it.

Read the exchange and return conditions too, distinguishing an unopened product from an opened or personalised item. This guide does not promise that you can try a fragrance and then return the set. An unresolved question about contents or conditions deserves an answer from the seller before payment.

A gift set worksheet to complete before deciding

Your comparison is ready when you can explain the role of each item and the extra amount paid. Check charges and conditions at the time of purchase; neither example in this guide is an offer.

  • Main bottle: full name, concentration, volume and variant: …
  • Other items and quantities, one per line: …
  • Items the recipient actually wants to use: …
  • Bottle alone delivered: …; set delivered: …; difference: …
  • Contents, delivery time, packaging and return conditions confirmed: …
  • Decision: does the extra amount match what I want to give?

Compare a set first by its exact contents, then by the extra amount actually paid for useful items.
